Good novel about a young girl on a farm in England (I think) who goes to work for a local minister, and what transpires from there. Nell Leyshon writes in a deliberately naive style; Mary has only just learned to read and write, and writes simply and directly. I enjoyed the book and didn't find it too predictable. It's been compared to Alias Grace and I can see the resemblance; both take as themes the power dynamics between master and servant. Mary is virtually a prisoner, treated like property and her captors/employers don't even imagine she has a will or wishes of her own. Too bad for them. full review: http://www.bostonbibliophile.com/2013/01/review-colour-of-milk-by-nell-leyshon.html
