THE TIGER is a fascinating, engrossing thriller about a lesser-known (at least to me) part of Russia and the people and animals trying to stake out an existence there. The story follows the hunt for an Amur tiger who has killed a poacher. Author John Vaillant goes into remarkable detail about the circumstances and culture surrounding the incident and what happens in response- the hunt for the tiger. The hunt itself occupies only a small section at the end; most of the book is given over to a study of this remarkable area and its culture. I gobbled up this great read like popcorn and enjoyed every morsel and bite.
